Beacon Indus Data Center Hub

Beacon proposes four 300 MW data halls and a 1.494 GW natural-gas power plant near Indus as part of its announced six-site Alberta portfolio. Rocky View County approved the area structure plan and land-use redesignation in June 2025. The federal early decision ended the Impact Assessment Act planning phase without requiring a further federal assessment, but it did not approve construction. The AUC has held its oral hearing on the power plant, and no final decision has been issued. The AUC has not stated that the proceeding is formally closed. Later municipal development permits are still required.

Dr. Brad Stelfox, retained by the Indus and Area Residents Group and appearing as an independent expert witness, says Beacon and Stantec's review leaves out relevant regional land uses, does not model how effects could build over time, and considers only the Indus data centre despite other operating and proposed projects in the region. This is expert evidence filed by an intervener, not an AUC finding.
