ADCW inventory scope: The project-demand, generation, and water summaries above cover 47 proposed, approved, and under-construction projects. The 20 operating facilities and 4 inactive proposals remain in the full directory, but are excluded from those summaries so existing use is not mixed with proposed new demand. The separate AESO explorer below covers its broader connection-request list.

Why should I care?

Large data centre campuses create new electricity demand. Meeting it can require dedicated power plants, gas pipelines, substations, cooling systems, and water infrastructure built alongside the server buildings.

Power · AESO connection requests

How much grid power is being requested?

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) tracks applications for grid connections. This number adds the requested grid capacity of its data-related entries, including projects paired with gas generation or batteries.

27.6 GW

62 AESO entries · 27,646.29 MW requested

All included areas, stages, and statuses

Requested capacity, not power currently being used or a total approved for connection. 1 GW = 1,000 MW.

Start with all requests, then narrow by area, connection stage, or status. The number, bars, and entry list update together.

AESO November 2026 project list. Verified November 4, 2026.

Monthly project list verified by ADCW. Use Refresh data to check for a newer map update.

Included: Data Load, Gas + Data Load, Battery + Data Load, and Cogen + Data Load. Recently Cancelled entries are excluded.

Counted: AESO's Total DTS (Demand Transmission Service), the requested addition to grid-load capacity. Supply capacity is excluded. Entries are not a count of distinct campuses; battery hybrids may include charging load.

Where do these requests stand?

AESO statuses describe how requests are being handled. They are not consecutive phases or guarantees of approval.

Active

The accepted request is progressing through assessment or connection work. Some connection phases may already be in service; this is not a statement that the whole facility is operating.

2.2 GW23 entries

ISD Under Review

AESO is reconsidering the requested in-service date, meaning when the connection would become available. The request has not been cancelled.

21.1 GW30 entries

Cluster 3

The request is in AESO's third group of projects being assessed together. This applies to qualifying generation or storage projects, including data-related hybrids. The 3 identifies the group, not Stage 3.

4.3 GW9 entries

Status amounts use the selected area and stage, before the status filter. All included statuses are selected on first load. AESO's status definitions ↗

What do the numbered connection stages mean?

Stage is progress through the grid-connection process. The route varies by project type; these are short summaries, not data-centre approval or construction labels.

Stage 1: Scope / preliminary assessment
Define the connection and studies needed. Cluster projects receive a preliminary grid assessment.
Stage 2: Assessment / detailed studies
Study grid effects, connection options, and costs. Cluster projects undergo detailed assessment.
Stage 3: Regulatory preparation
Prepare connection designs, agreements, and required regulatory applications.
Stage 4: Regulatory review
The Alberta Utilities Commission reviews required connection applications. Approval is not automatic.
Stage 5: Grid construction
Build the connection infrastructure and prepare to energize it. This does not establish the data centre's construction status.
Stage 6: Connection close-out
Bring the connection into service and complete final requirements. The facility's commercial operation date can differ.

Source, filters, and limits

The saved figures are checked against AESO's monthly project list and public connection-project map service, linked from its connection project reporting page. AESO publishes its project list monthly. The verified monthly snapshot appears on page load. Refresh data optionally checks the map service for a newer update; if a complete response cannot be verified, the displayed data stays in place. Unfamiliar categories or possible data-related requests outside the selected categories require review before the live total can update.

All included statuses and connection stages are counted by default. Status descriptions follow AESO's project-list guide; stage summaries follow its independent assessment, cluster assessment, and connection processes.

Connection, Cluster, and Behind the Fence (BTF) entries are included where they have a data-related type. Zero-MW entries remain in the entry count. Cogen means combined heat and power. The mixed gas, battery, and cogen types are included to avoid dropping data-related requests simply because they include supply or storage.

This is a source-defined request queue, not ADCW's verified project inventory, approved connections, operating use, or an estimate of every Alberta data centre. Off-grid proposals may be absent. Do not add this total to generation capacity or to ADCW's separately curated project-demand total. AESO's full dashboard opens with its own controls; these filters are not passed to Power BI.

Old scale versus new scale

An operating facility and a proposed campus

At their published capacities, Beacon Indus would equal about 480 times Qu Edmonton EDM1's electricity capacity.

2.5 MWQu Edmonton EDM1Operating facility capacity

≈ 480×the electricity capacity

1.2 GWBeacon IndusProposed campus capacity

Each small mark represents the capacity of one Qu Edmonton EDM1 facility. This compares published electricity capacity, not building sizes, actual use, or a count of Indus buildings. Indus is proposed. 1 GW = 1,000 MW.

Why electricity capacity matters

About 10.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) in one year

If a facility drew 1.2 GW continuously for a year, it would use slightly more electricity than was delivered across Calgary in all of 2025.

This illustrates the proposed maximum at full demand every hour, not the project's expected or actual use. ENMAX reports 9.8 TWh delivered in Calgary in 2025.

One portfolio: 4.5 GW. Beacon's announced six-site Alberta portfolio alone equals about 44% of Alberta's 2025 average demand. Portfolio announcement, not operating demand or a guarantee that every site will be built.

Meeting new data centre demand can require dedicated power plants, gas pipelines, substations, cooling systems, and water infrastructure alongside the server buildings.

Putting water demand in human terms

What does 13.8 million L/day mean?

1 m³1,000 L

This total comes from only 5 of 47 active projects. It combines comparable projected or proposed daily water volumes, including water published for related power plants. It is not measured province-wide use.

This comparison uses Alberta's 2021 residential average of 195 litres per person per day, the latest province-wide figure published by Statistics Canada. It compares volume only and does not mean the project water is potable, comes from a municipal system, or is entirely consumed.View the Statistics Canada data.

Read the label, not just the number. Water licensed, withdrawn, consumed, and returned describe different things.

About the project

Evidence before rhetoric.

Alberta Data Centre Watch is an independent public-interest project that makes fragmented information about Alberta data centre development easier to find, compare, and understand.

ADCW is not affiliated with any government, regulator, municipality, political party, or project proponent. It tracks material data centre infrastructure across AI, hyperscale, high-performance computing, colocation, cryptocurrency, and other workloads, plus directly related power infrastructure when the connection can be documented. Ordinary internal server rooms fall outside the current scope.

Primary sources come first. Company and government claims are attributed to the people making them. Unknown information stays visible, and every material summary should lead back to an original record.
