Why scale matters

Alberta's existing data centres are typically measured in megawatts. Some proposed data centre campuses exceed one gigawatt. The difference is not incremental. It is hundreds of times larger.

About 10.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) in one year

If a facility drew 1.2 GW continuously for a year, it would use slightly more electricity than was delivered across Calgary in all of 2025.

    Added the October 8 to December 9, 2024 public-process chronology and Greenview's March 25, 2025 land-agreement authorization. The record now distinguishes what municipal minutes establish from the LOI details reported from access-to-information records.

  5. Armada Nowlit Wabasca / Hoole Data Centre

    Added the documented 50 MW cryptocurrency-oriented proposal, two closed Hoole power-plant applications, the AUC's land and consultation concerns, and independent gas-asset records. Construction, operation, and the link between the 50 MW data centre and 9.5 MW plant remain unconfirmed.

  6. Keephills Data Centre Development

    Added a full profile explaining what is approved, the three different electricity figures, and the grid-planning dates. Added TransAlta's July filing, which still makes development conditional on approvals and final agreements. Water needs, noise at nearby homes, and an opening date remain unconfirmed.

  7. Sturgeon Data Centre

    Added Clark Builders' approximately 1.6 GW compute-capacity and 2.9-million-sq.-ft. disclosures. The capacity conflict remains unresolved; Meta's 1 GW announcement stays the headline figure, and the builder's size is not treated as an approved footprint.

Alberta Data Centre Watch is an independent public-interest project that makes fragmented information about Alberta data centre development easier to find, compare, and understand.

ADCW is not affiliated with any government, regulator, municipality, political party, or project proponent. It tracks material data centre infrastructure across AI, hyperscale, high-performance computing, colocation, cryptocurrency, and other workloads, plus directly related power infrastructure when the connection can be documented. Ordinary internal server rooms fall outside the current scope.

Primary sources come first. Company and government claims are attributed to the people making them. Unknown information stays visible, and every material summary should lead back to an original record.
